Identity and Authenticity Online

Activities on the Internet differ significantly from activities in physical space. It is difficult to decide who the others are that you are encountering. Are they what they pretend to be? Are they machine or humans? Could they be deepfakes? How should we treat them if we are not sure about their authentic identity? Should we enforce them to show who they are? How should we deal with ambiguous identity as a society? This session explains the problem of identity and authenticity on the net from several disciplinary perspectives: technology, law, ethics, public value, politics, and criminology.
